BPM

Business Process Management 'BPM' is the conscious, strategic, regular practice of examining, evaluating, prioritizing and improving the processes which run a Business. Some refer to this practice as Business Process Portfolio Management. Studies have found that companies who regularly engage in the practice of BPM are more nimble, and have powerful cross organizational synergies that give them significant strategic advantages. At a more tactical level, BPM is the fluid combination of Workflow, Portals, and EAI (enterprise application integration) that benefit both the IT and the Business aspects of an organization. Some of these benefits include:

True BPM solutions allow for modeling, development, simulation, management, and monitoring of both Human Facing Workflow and Application Integration, and their corresponding data flows from within the same platform and user interface. BPM solutions are capable of handling sequential and event driven processes or a combination of both, without duplication of effort. BPM solutions integrate with and compliment Portals, ETL (extract-transform-load) and Metadirectory implementations by assisting with authentication, authorization, reporting/analytics, and identity/group management functionalities. BPM solutions are not confined to any one ERP (enterprise resource planning) system; rather have the ability to accommodate workflow and EAI across any set of applications or processes. It should be restated that BPM is not EAI, Workflow, Portals or ERP/CRM's, individually, it is a balanced combination of them all. The illustrations herein, provide two different cross-sections of what a BPM solution might look like architecturally. The Major components of a solid BPM solution are: Application Integration, Human Facing Workflow, Applications, Databases & Directories, Reporting & Administration, and a singular display mechanism such as a Generation II Portal. If properly assembled, these components provide solutions across organizations, breaking down traditional silos and barriers. Great organizations have no tolerance for departmental silos or fractured IT infrastructures. Correspondingly, they have the agility to react to customer demands more rapidly. Increased focus on cross organizational business initiatives not only increases agility, but decreases expenses, improves efficiency and impacts profitability. Therefore BPM is a key component of organizational success.
